Calling all new students! Take up your place in one of our new Welcome Groups and give yourself a head start settling in at University.

This article explains an exciting opportunity available to every new student joining the University in 2018. Sign up here or read on to find out how you can meet fellow new students who share your interests and get chatting before you arrive.

If you are a new student coming to the University of Portsmouth in September, then we have a place ready for you in a Welcome Group. Your group will consist of 15 to 20 other new students from across the University who share similar interests, so it’s a great way to start making the connections that will help you settle in and make the most of University life.

Each group will be led by a friendly Welcome Ambassador – a current student at the University of Portsmouth ready to provide tips for settling in, and to share their knowledge of the University, the city and university life.

As well as helping you all get chatting and getting to know each other online before you arrive, your Welcome Ambassador will host a fun meet up at the start of term for everyone in your Welcome Group who wants to come.

Most importantly, joining a Welcome Group will give you the opportunity to meet new people and make friends beyond your course mates and house/hall mates, and to make connections that otherwise might not have been possible. Our online network with its links to every other Welcome Group, special interest groups and Student Union societies means there are only ever one or two links in the chain between you and the people you want to connect with.

At the University of Portsmouth, we celebrate diversity and inclusivity, and want to make sure every one of you can find a space where you feel you belong. Joining a Welcome Group offers a great introduction to the vibrant, welcoming learning community that we pride ourselves on offering here at the University of Portsmouth.

Opt in here to choose from the wide range of interests to connect on so that we can get started finding the right Welcome Group for you.

You can also email us at if you have any queries.

We look forward to receiving your sign up!
