This document will help you prepare for your installation of Windows 10.

Installation

The installation of Windows 10 will be conducted by Information Services staff.

Backing up files

Prior to your machine being upgraded to the Windows 10 operating system,  you will need to backup any data you have stored locally on your machine, this includes your Desktop and Documents folder.

You will need to review how much data you have stored locally and consider moving this to your Google Drive account which has unlimited storage or an external device such as a USB drive. If you require further assistance please contact the Service Desk.

Data stored on the N and K drives and Google Drive is unaffected by the change of operating system.

Backing up bookmarks

You will also need to backup any bookmarks you have. Please see links at the bottom of this article for instructions on how to back up bookmarks in Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox.

Printing

Before the instillation takes place it is advisable to find out the Printer Names that you use.

To do this:

1 Select the Start menu.

2 Select  "Control Panel".

2 Select "Hardware and Sounds" from the Left Menu.

3 Select Devices and Printers.

The printer names appear below the printer thumbnails.  The green tick indicates the default printer you currently have set up. Make a note of the printer names for future use.
