If you need to leave the PC or laptop you are using unattended, even for a few seconds, it is important to lock the device. If you do not lock the device it would be very easy for someone to access and compromise your network account, files and any online services that you are logged into.
Press the "Window" key and the "L" key on your keyboard together.
The University Lock screen will appear,your device will be locked.
Select the Start Menu icon which can be found at the bottom left of your screen.
Select the Account icon, a context menu will appear.
Select "Lock".The University Lock screen will appear,your device will be locked.
Unlocking your PC or Laptop
Click on the screen, the sign in screen will appear.
Type in your password and press enter on the keyboard.
To install a network printer select the "Install a Printer"icon on the desktop.
Select "Add a Printer".
Scroll to locate your printer. Double click on the printer name.
A dialogue box will appear, select "Finish".
Printer that require a username
Some printers require of you to enter your username in the printer settings. Instructions on how to do that are bellow. Please note that the university uses a variety of printers so the instructions may not be helpful. In those cases please contact service desk by calling 7777 or +44 (0)23 9284 7777, or sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Go to Devices and printers by clicking on the Install a Printer icon on your desktop
Right click on the printer which requires a username and then choose Printing preferences
On the window that appeared click on the Job Handling tab.
On this window tick User name to enable the field and enter your username e.g. bloggsj
You may wish to open files with specific applications. For example you may want to open PDF documents using Adobe Reader rather than the default MS Edge. To achieve thisyou will need to change the default application for the PDF file type.
Open the Start Menu and select the Settings Icon.
The Windows Setting Window will appear, select "Apps".
Select "Default apps" from the left hand menu.
Select "Choose default applications by file type".
A list of file types will appear (it may take a minute). Scroll down the list to locate the file type you wish to change.
Select the icon next to the file extension. The icon will be displaying the current application that is used to open files of this type.
A dialogue box will open, listing alternative applications you can use use to open files of this type. Select the application you wish to use. The icon will change reflecting the change you have made.
To close settings select the (X) Exit button located in top right of the window.
