This article will give you more information on leadership development opportunities within Defence or the Armed Forces.

There are four local organisations that offer University of Portsmouth students the opportunity to gain military and leadership experience. These are:

  • The Southampton University Officers' Training Corps (SUOTC) - The SUOTC offers unique opportunities to challenge yourself through a combination of military exercises, adventurous training activities, exciting expeditions and community projects. For more information please visit the SUOTC page of the Army website.
  • The Royal Navy - The Southampton University Royal Navy Unit (SURNU) is a military unit that is intended to give University students an insight into the roles and responsibilities of the Royal Navy. The unit offers numerous opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills, all of which make students more employable, whether they choose to join the Navy or not. To see what opportunities could be available to you, please visit the SURNU website.
  • The Royal Air Force - The nearest base is located in Southampton. The Southampton University Air Squadron (SUAS) is the perfect place to start for those interested in a career in the RAF. To find out more, have a look at the SUAS page of the RAF website.
  • The Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS) - The University of Portsmouth is one of only 12 UK universities approved by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for undergraduate students who are sponsored through the DTUS. The local DTUS unit is based in Southampton and currently has around 100 MoD sponsored students.

In addition, you can find out more at select Employer Events hosted by the Careers and Employability Service or by attending the Graduate Recruitment and Placement Fair held annually in October. Check the Events calendar on MyCareer (using your University of Portsmouth login) for more information.
