This article will inform you of the support available to students who are care leavers or who have lived in sheltered accommodation before coming to university.

Care Leavers’ Bursary

The University of Portsmouth is committed to ensuring that students leaving care are supported in their application to higher education and throughout their time at university. If you have been in care or looked after by a Local Authority you may be entitled to our additional support package which includes:

  • A £1,700 per year Care Leavers’ Bursary that does not need to be repaid
  • A Personal Support Finance Adviser who will be on hand throughout your time at university to provide support and guidance on your funding
  • A guaranteed place in Halls of Residence for the length of your course, including holidays (undergraduate students only)

To be eligible you must meet the following criteria:

  • have spent a significant time (at least 13 weeks) in care, some of which was during your teens and;
  • are currently leaving/transitioning the care system (within the last 12 months) or;
  • are defined as a 'former relevant child pursuing education' under 25 years old.

You may also qualify for the bursary if you currently live in a foyer federation property (or equivalent).
