This article explains how to connect your Windows PC or laptop to the University VPN.

These instructions detail how to connect to the University VPN and have been tested on a Windows 7 machine.  They show how to connect to the University VPN when off campus.

Install VPN

Open a web browser and go to the  https://gp.vpn.port.ac.uk/global-protect/login.esp website.

Login with your university username and password, e.g. bloggsj or up123456 via the window shown in Figure 1.

Another window will appear as shown in Figure 2. Select the appropriate download for your operating system, i.e. Windows 32 or 64-bit. (How can I tell if my computer is running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows?)

Once the file has downloaded run the program to install the software accepting the default settings.

Use VPN

  • Connect to VPN for the first time
      • Open the program from the Windows 7 Start menu: Start >> All Programs / All Apps >> Palo Alto Networks >> Global Protect
      • The login screen shown in Figure 3 will be displayed.

    • To connect to the VPN enter the following values into the GlobalProtect window:

      Portal: 

      gp.vpn.port.ac.uk 

      Username:

      University network account user name, e.g. bloggsj

      Password:

      University network account password

      and then click 'Connect'.

      The VPN globe icon will be displayed in the notification area of the system tray. While you are connected to the VPN the icon will show a shield icon, as shown in Figure 4.

  • Disconnect from VPN
    • To disconnect from the VPN, right click the globe icon in the System Tray or the System Notification area and then click 'Disconnect'.

      When you are disconnected the icon will show a white cross in a red disc, as shown in Figure 5.

  • Re-connect to VPN
      • To re-connect to the VPN, right click the globe icon in the System Tray or the System Notification area and then click 'Connect', as shown in Figure 6.

      • When prompted enter your login credentials and then click 'Apply', as shown in Figure 3 above.

        When the VPN is connected the globe icon will show the shield , as shown in Figure 4 above.
