This article will provide information on disciplinary procedures in halls of residence.

Full details may be found within the Halls Handbook and University’s Student Conduct Policy 2022.

Initially, all matters are dealt with by a disciplinary interview with the Res Life team. Depending upon the nature and seriousness of the offence, one or more of the following sanctions may be applied (without limitation):

  • Any penalty deemed reasonable in the circumstances which may include an order to apologise, the restriction of facilities, the requirement to attend a fire safety workshop or an imposed contract of conduct.
  • Verbal warning that will be noted on the student’s University record for the remainder of their time in residence and will be taken into consideration if any further infringements occur.
  • A written warning that will be noted on the student’s University record for the remainder of their time at University and will be taken into consideration if any further infringements occur.
  • Charges for damage to property and any other cost incurred by the University as a result of the infringement.
  • Temporary withdrawal of a specified service or facility for a period not to exceed the remainder of the academic year. This can include exclusion from halls for the remainder of the academic year.

Exclusion from halls

Exclusion from halls is one of the sanctions that can apply to cases of misconduct. In cases with this outcome, a Notice to Seek Possession will be issued to seek possession of the student’s room on the basis of a breach of the accommodation agreement.

Liability to pay halls fees following exclusion - do I still need to pay if asked to leave?

See this article which details the liability to pay fees if asked to leave.

Major offences

Where the matter is of a sufficiently serious nature, an allegation of major offence is made to the Academic Registrar as per section 13 under the Student Conduct Policy 2022. This will then be heard by an independent disciplinary panel and could lead to a temporary suspension or exclusion from the University.

Appealing disciplinary action

Students have the right to appeal against the findings of the Hall Manager and a disciplinary interview/panel, or against the penalty imposed. Further details can be found in the Student Conduct Policy 2022
