This article provides information on the extra support available for disabled students doing exams and coursework.
The University's assessment procedures have been developed, as far as possible, to avoid placing you at a disadvantage.
Where appropriate and possible, further specific provision will be made to ensure that you are given every reasonable opportunity, fairly, to demonstrate your abilities.
The necessary procedures are managed by the Additional Support and Disability Advice Centre (ASDAC) who are responsible for determining reasonable adjustments and overseeing their implementation.
Examples of adjustment and where they apply
Adjustments apply to the processes associated with assessment (examinations, in-class tests, and coursework). Examples of provisions that may be made to accommodate the impact of certain disabilities include:
However, adjustment does not apply to the outcomes of assessments. So, the University will not take disability into account when marking your work; it will be marked against the same academic standards as all other students.
In all cases, evidence of disability will be required before any adjustments can be made.
In most cases a doctor or consultant's letter confirming the presence of the disability and the nature of the difficulties it causes will be sufficient. See Guidance on Evidence Letters.
In the case of students with any kind of cognitive impairment (e.g. general or specific learning difficulties (like dyslexia), ADHD, or head injury), a post-sixteen diagnostic assessment carried out by an appropriately qualified professional will be required.
