This article will give you information on contracts in halls of residence.

Start and end dates

  • On the day you sign your contract via the Student Home Portal, you will see a start date and an end date on there.

  • For Unite contracts, please see your Unite Students Portal for start and end dates.

  • For The Student Housing Company (TSHC) contracts, please see your TSHC Portal for start and end dates.

  • Be sure to keep checking these periodically to avoid getting yourself into emergency accommodation situations i.e. forgetting when you need to move out.

Contract length – University halls of residence

  • Your contract will generally be for 40 weeks and if you move out before the end of your contract, you will have to continue to pay for the room.

  • Rooms in our halls of residence (managed by the University of Portsmouth) are offered for either one semester or 40 weeks depending on the length of your course.

  • If you are studying for a full academic year, you will be allocated for 40 weeks; if you are studying for one semester, you will be allocated for one semester.

  • University of Portsmouth-managed halls do not ask students to provide details of a guarantor.

Contracts for Unite Students buildings (Chaucer House, Greetham Street, Margaret Rule, Trafalgar and James Watson halls) OR The Student Housing Company (TSHC) building (Catherine House)

  • If you have been allocated to a Unite Students or TSHC building, your contract would be for a 40 weeks period only and under general conditions you will be liable for paying for your room until the end of the agreed period with the appropriate accommodation provider.

  • Unite Students will ask all students to provide details of a guarantor. The guarantor will not be credit checked and can be a parent, friend or colleague and does not have to be UK based.

  • TSHC will ask all students for a guarantor and they must UK-based.

  • If you do not want to or cannot provide details of a guarantor, please contact Student Housing on international.housing@port.ac.uk and we can make a note to only offer you a room in a University hall.

  • The University of Portsmouth will advise you on which accommodation you have been offered and the next steps to accept and secure the booking.

  • If you are allocated to a Unite Students building your contract will be directly with Unite Students.

  • If you are allocated to the TSHC building, your contract will be directly with them.

  • As per the contracts, Unite Students or TSCH will email you directly with their Terms and Conditions, which you need to accept online.
