This article will provide some basic advice on what steps to take in order to get into your chosen career. It will also explain how you can get further help and support from the University’s Careers and Employability Service.
Having chosen the career or sector you want to get into will bring you to the next stage of your career planning. You will need to do some research as to which roles are available, what qualifications you need and if there is any specialised training you need to complete, either before applying or that will be required on the job.
You might have more than one area that you are interested in, so spend time getting a good understanding of what the different sectors have to offer. The Careers and Employability Service provides a range of resources to help you research your chosen career area, including sector career guides and individual job profiles.
Planning the action you need to take
It is a good idea to produce an action plan, as this will help you bring together all the work you have done so far in planning your career.
An action plan should include the steps you need to take to get from where you are now to where you want to be in the future. It should also include a timeframe for what you hope to achieve and details of when you will review your plan. The action plan also needs to be flexible so that it can take into account any changes to your circumstances and you should also have a contingency plan to fall back on. As far as the time frame is concerned it is useful to think of short, medium and long-term goals. The Careers and Employability Service has developed some guides to analyse your skills and starting points for action planning
