This article has information on the coaching, volunteering and career enhancing opportunities at the University.

We offer a number of great opportunities at the University of Portsmouth to develop your leadership skills through work based learning. Opportunities are there for you from working with our sports clubs to working in schools and the community. We work closely with the University's Careers and Employability Service, Portsmouth School Sport Partnership and local community partners to offer opportunities ranging from coaching, officiating and sports development, to marketing and academic placements.

Sports Clubs

We have over 35 sports clubs that are organised by students. With a range of committee positions available in each club, the scope for personal development is huge. Many of these roles are voted for by club members, so membership within a club is often advantageous. Roles can include: president, club captain, media secretary, welfare secretary as well as many others. These roles help students develop skills in organising teams, events, and developing their club. The transferable skills gained can help enhance employability for you, and count towards your higher education achievement record. More information can be found on our sports clubs page.

Officiating and Refereeing Hub

We recruit students to officiate and referee alongside our sports clubs, this could be for social sessions or drop in leagues. If you want paid work while you're studying, this could be for you.

If you are a student who has completed your FA Referee qualification already, you can access paid work immediately on our football leagues. Unqualified but want to referee? No worries, we offer students the chance to complete the FA Basic Referee qualification course for free. You would then pay back with some voluntary hours officiating our leagues before gaining paid work opportunities. Successful applicants will be mentored by our Referee Activator before accessing paid work within one of our sports programmes. This is a fantastic opportunity to get your FA Basic Referee qualification and gain experience as a football referee, all for free!

Strength and Conditioning

Our strength and conditioning interns, juniors and coaches deliver sessions to our sports scholars and sports clubs while learning practical skills. Strength and conditioning plays an integral part to the success of an athlete or team, it's more than just fitness. Our coaches plan, deliver and review the physical and physiological preparation of athletes aligned to specific sports performance outcomes. There are a number of roles and opportunities across our 25 sport scholars and our 35 sports clubs, of which many have multiple teams.

Interns and Placements

Our internships and placements are an ideal solution to help with your experience and employability. Each year we have students from the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science on academic placements with us, offering project support on a number of key sports projects. Projects can include; Sports Strategy planning, Varsity, Sports Awards, marketing and communications, sports team performance analysis, sport psychology and community schools outreach programmes. Previous interns have delivered a Dance Off and Cheer Off event. 19 schools were involved, with 295 students taking part, working with 43 student coaches.

There are loads more opportunities to get involved in sport. If we're still not hitting the nail on the head, visit the Careers and Employability Service.
