This article will explain information for Tier 4 students studying part-time.

UKVI introduced provision for part-time study under Tier 4 on 11 January 2018 for part-time postgraduate courses (RQF level 7/Masters level and above).

Tier 4 students studying on a part-time course will have the following restrictions:

  • No employment (this includes work placements)
  • No dependants

You will need to meet all the other requirements for the Tier 4 General visa including:

  • ATAS Certificate (if required for the course)
  • Maintenance - first year's course fees and 9 months living costs in your bank account for 28 days
  • TB Test Certificate (if required)
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) - currently £300 per year
  • Register with the Police (if required on your visa)
  • Cap on years of study

Update:

  • From 10 January 2019, students with Tier 4 immigration permission (leave) to study a part-time postgraduate course will be able to apply to extend their Tier 4 leave in the UK to continue studying on a part-time or on a full-time basis.
  • Students on a part-time PHD course will be eligible to apply under the Doctorate Extension Scheme (Tier 4 DES).
