The web proxy allows you to browse the Internet as if you were on campus, giving you easy access to online web resources.

Web proxy is no longer the recommended Work Anywhere solution for accessing websites as if you are on campus. Virtual Private Networking (VPN) provides a more comprehensive solution for remote access to University systems and websites.

If you are unable to install VPN, the instructions below explain how to setup Web Proxy on when using Mozilla Firefox.

The following instructions were produced using Windows Vista and Firefox. Please remember that as long as you are using the web proxy you must adhere to the rights and responsibilities that the University imposes. Some sites may also be inaccessible whilst using the web proxy.

Connect to the web proxy

  1. From Firefox, choose Options
  2. Choose the Advanced option then choose the Network tab. Click Settings...

  3. Select the Manual proxy configuration option and enter the following settings:

    • HTTP Proxy:
    • Port: 81
    • Tick the Use this proxy server for all protocals box

  4. When you navigate to a web page page, Firefox will prompt you to enter your computer account username and password. You may wish for Firefox to remember your password.

To test the web proxy, enter into the address bar. If you can view the University telephone directory then the web proxy is configured correctly.

Disconnect the web proxy

  1. Login to the web proxy and select Tools then Options
